A new kitten checklist is really a shopping list with a deadline, because the kitten arrives whether you are ready or not. This page is the list I would hand a friend, eleven things, one for every job a kitten hands you in week one.

I grew up in Henderson, Nevada and spent years as a mechanic in a custom off-road shop. Strays walked in through the open garage doors all summer. We kept water and food bowls out for them, and a group of barn cats settled in and never left. Kittens came with that. Small, loud, and completely unprepared for by me.

How I ranked this kitten checklist

My mechanic brain never switched off. I look at a litter box the way I looked at a truck part: what is it made of, what does it do all day, what breaks first. Every kit I bought back then had a few good pieces and a pile of filler, so this ranking is built to stop you paying for filler.

• One product per job. Nine jobs a kitten hands you, no duplicate answers. A second litter box is a good idea, a second brand of wand toy is not.
• Kitten sized, in the maker’s own words. A grown cat’s gear is the wrong shape for an animal this small. If the listing does not say it suits a kitten, I say so.
• What happens after a month. Cardboard shreds, mesh floors rip, cheap plastic cracks. I read the low reviews first on everything here.
• A record I can lean on. Nearly everything here has been through thousands of homes. The one exception is flagged in its own card and kept out of my top three.

Litter box, litter and the mat

Start here, because this is the one thing that has to work before the kitten walks in the door. A kitten needs an open box with low sides it can step over, not a covered one, and not a top entry model. Put the box somewhere quiet, away from the food, and show the kitten where it is on the first afternoon.

Two rules from the shop cats. One box per cat plus a spare, so a single kitten gets two. And unscented clumping litter to start, in a small bag, because a kitten who dislikes the litter finds carpet instead. No litter brand was crawled for this page, so I name none.

The owner stories are why it leads. One buyer runs three of these for three six month old siblings and says nothing smaller would cope. Another calls it a no frills affordable pan and points out that smaller cats generally prefer an open box, which is exactly the kitten case. A rabbit owner uses one too, which tells you how low the sides sit.

The honest limits. It is small, so a kitten grows out of it inside a year and you move up a size, and the sides that make it easy to climb into are the sides that let an enthusiastic digger throw litter over the edge. That is what the mat below is for. There is no lid, so put it where you can live with the sight of it.

Owners who have been through several mats rate this one highest. One with two kittens says the rug behind the box finally stays clean. Another empties it straight back into the box, which is the trick: the litter you catch is litter you already paid for. One cat has decided the mat is a bed, which is a compliment of sorts.

Two things the listing does not lead with. Owners split on the size, and a few call it smaller than they pictured, so measure the gap in front of your box before you order. And on tile it can slide, especially with a kitten launching itself off it, so a strip of double sided tape underneath is worth having ready.

Food and bowls

Kittens eat little and often, which is the argument for small cans over a big tub. Wet food also carries water into an animal that is unreliable about drinking, and it is easier on a kitten still working out what chewing is for.

On bowls, buy shallow and heavy. A deep bowl presses on a kitten’s whiskers and a light one skates across the kitchen. No standalone bowl set came through this crawl, so none gets a card here. The kit at number four includes bowls, and a wide flat saucer does the job until you shop properly.

The people who go through the most kitten food chose it too. One fosterer says it is the only wet kitten food they buy on repeat, plain packaging and all. Another adopted a litter and reports every one of them eating without fuss. A third likes the texture for a kitten just learning to wean, which is the hardest week to feed.

The split is flavors, not quality. Some kittens turn their nose up at the seafood cans, one owner ties the seafood recipe to a loose stomach in her two, and a variety pack means you find that out cheaply instead of buying a case of the wrong thing. Feeding amounts and any change of food belong on the label and with your vet, not with me.

Carrier, and the all in one kitten kit

The carrier is the item people forget and then need first, because the kitten has to get home somehow and to the vet days later. Buy one before pickup day, put a blanket in it, and leave it open on the floor so it stops being the box that means needles.

No standalone carrier came through this crawl. What did is a bundle holding one, plus the bowls and the small grooming tools, and for a first time owner one box beats nine.

I will be straight with you about this one, because it is the exception on this page. It is a new listing with a short record. A handful of owners have written about it, and they are positive, one calling the litter box and carrier good quality and another buying it as a welcome home gift. That is genuinely all the evidence there is, and it is why this kit is not in my top three no matter how neatly it fills the gaps.

The other kitten kit I looked at, the ten piece Eccliy set, has a longer record and a warning inside it: owners disagree about whether it suits kittens, and more than one reports the litter box arriving cracked. The home base room, and where a kitten sleeps

Here is the advice that changed how my kittens settled. Never give a new kitten the run of the house on night one. Give it one small space with the box, the food, the bed and a toy, and let it come out from there. A spare bathroom works. A playpen works better, because it sits in the room you are in.

The kitten reviews are the strongest thing in the crawl. One owner used it while caring for a mother cat and her litter and calls it a lifesaver, light enough to move room to room and big enough for the kittens to actually play. Another took in two tiny kittens dumped in a backyard and turned it into their condo. The zip top is the detail people mention, because it stops an explorer going over the wall.

The listing is written for small dogs first, so read it with that in mind. The complaints are consistent enough to repeat: the plastic floor panel tears if you drag it, and a few owners report the frame collapsing under a determined animal. It is an enclosure for a kitten and a quiet corner, not a cage for something that wants out badly.

One review sold me on it for this list specifically: an owner adopted a kitten, opened the bed, and found the kitten already asleep in it before the packaging was cleared away. Another has a heavy arthritic cat who had refused every bed in the house and finally settled in this one, which tells you the rim is doing real work rather than looking cute.

Two practical notes. It runs generous for a kitten, so expect a very small animal to sleep in one third of it and grow into the rest. And the maker does not recommend removing the cover, so treat spills quickly and check the wash instructions before the first accident rather than after.

Scratching, before the couch learns

Scratching is not bad behavior, it is maintenance. A kitten sheds claw sheaths, stretches and marks, and it does all three on whatever is nearest. Give it a legal target in week one and you never have the argument.

Put the scratcher where the kitten already scratches, not where it looks tidy. Beside the sofa arm, by the doorway it charges through. A cardboard pad is the cheap way to learn which surface your cat prefers before you spend real money on a post.

This is the lowest rated product on the page and I am not going to dress it up. The complaint is always the same: they are small, they are thinner than people expect, and owners of grown cats say the cardboard rips apart inside a week. One reviewer said flatly that they are smaller than they look and the cat likes them anyway, which is the honest summary.

Read that as sizing information rather than a verdict. A kitten is small, light and does not have the shoulders to destroy cardboard in an afternoon, and the reviews from kitten owners run much warmer than the reviews from people who bought them for an adult. Tape one to the wall at kitten height, sprinkle the catnip, and treat them as consumables. When the cat outgrows them, move up to a proper post or a cat tree.

Toys a kitten actually plays with

A kitten needs two different kinds of play and most people only buy one. Interactive play is you on the end of a wand, which is how a kitten learns that hands are not prey. Solo play is something it can hunt on its own at four in the morning while you sleep through it.

Rotate them. Half the toys go in a drawer and swap weekly, and a cheap pack lasts months longer than it should. One safety note for every toy here: strings, feathers and small balls are supervised toys, and the wand goes in the drawer when you leave the room.

Every owner review lands on the same shape. One adopted a kitten, did not know what to buy, and reports the cat loving every single toy in the pack. Another says the feather wand became the daily favorite and the rest went into rotation. A third with several cats says the variety is what stops them getting bored, which is exactly the argument for a mixed pack over one expensive toy.

Two honest points. The bundle is randomised, so what arrives is not always what is pictured, and the cheap toys are cheap: some owners report a toy falling apart within an hour of enthusiastic use. At this price that is the deal, and it is why I treat the pack as a diagnostic. Whatever survives the first month is the toy you buy properly.

These get the most emphatic reviews of any toy in the crawl. One owner with a cat who ignores everything calls them hands down the best cat toy she has bought, and has kept the same three going for months. Another says a twenty year old cat played like a kitten again. A third worked through the sensible questions, is it worth it, will the cat use it, will it survive claws and teeth, and answered yes on all three at the four month mark.

The catch is the catnip. A kitten under about six months often has no reaction to catnip at all, and that is normal, so do not judge the toy in week one. The plush also picks up fur and dirt, and some owners find one cat gets overstimulated and needs the toy taken away for a while.

Grooming and nail care

Neither of these is a day one buy, which is why they sit at the bottom of the list and out of my top three. Both become weekly items by about week three, and starting early is the trick. A kitten whose paws have been handled since it arrived is a cat you can trim alone at three years old.

Trim the clear tip only. The pink inside the claw is the quick and it bleeds, so take a sliver, do two claws, and stop while everybody is calm. Ask your vet or a groomer to show you once if you are unsure.

The review that convinced me came from a veterinary technician who keeps a pair in her clinic kit and says colleagues keep borrowing them, because they are sharp and trim a cat’s claws quickly. Another owner uses them on small dogs and on dew claws, the awkward ones. A third mentions being able to see the nail while cutting, which is the thing that stops you taking too much.

There is not much to criticise on a tool this simple. It is small, so anyone with big hands or a struggling cat will want the rubber grip properly seated before starting, and a blade this size is for kittens, cats and small animals only. A big dog’s nails need a different tool entirely.

The owners who need them most are the ones who rate them. One keeps two elderly cats clean between feedings, and mentions using them on the kittens too. Another cleaned two long haired cats and reports the coat noticeably brighter afterwards, with the cats purring through it. A third gets the point across in one line: it does what it says and the cat does not mind.

Where it splits is texture and scent. Some cats hate being wiped, some owners find the wipes drier than expected, and the mild scent that most people like is exactly what a few cats object to. Try one on the back of the neck first, and stop if the skin reacts.

n/s = the maker does not say. “Kitten sized” is a check only when the listing states kitten, under six months, or a small size made for small cats. “Washable” only when the maker states washable or wipe clean. “Comes as a set” means more than one usable piece in the box.

“No assembly” is a check only when the maker states it opens or folds ready to use. “Packs down” only when the maker states foldable, portable or a carry bag.

Three columns are my judgment and not the maker’s. “Buy more than one” is checked for the items a household normally owns in twos, one per cat plus a spare. “Needed in week one” is checked for what has to be in the house before the kitten is, the same rule that builds the printable list below. “Thousands of owners” is checked where the owner record runs into the thousands, and it is the only reason the kit at number four is not in my top three.

First week at home, and the vet

Day one, keep the world small. Carrier open in the home base room, box in one corner, food in the other, bed between them. Sit on the floor and let the kitten come to you. Most hide for a few hours, some for a day, and that is normal.

Day two to four, expand slowly. Open one more room while you are in it, then close it again at night. Feed small meals often and show the kitten the box after every meal and every nap.

Day five onward, build the habits. Hold the paws for a few seconds a day. Brush for a minute. Play twice a day with the wand until the kitten is genuinely tired, and end every session with a catch. Never use your hands as the toy.

The vet visit. Book it in the first week and take the paperwork the shelter or breeder gave you. I am not a vet, and nothing here is medical advice. What I can give you is the list of questions worth writing down before you go.

• What vaccinations does this kitten need, and when is each one due?
• What parasite treatment does it need, and how often?
• When should the kitten be spayed or neutered?
• Is the kitten microchipped, and if not, can you do it here?
• What food and how much, at this age and weight?
• What warning signs should send me back before the next appointment?

The three I would buy first

Eleven products is a full checklist, not a shopping trip. If you are picking the kitten up tomorrow and can only order three things tonight, these are the three, one at each price level.

Notice what is not here. The clippers and the wipes are the two cheapest things on this list and both are excellent, but you need them in week two. The 47 piece kit is the tidiest answer to the carrier and the bowls and it still misses the three, because its owner record is a handful of people deep.

What do you need for a kitten without a mother?

Everything on this list, plus warmth and a feeding plan from a vet rather than from a website. An orphaned kitten cannot regulate its own temperature or eat solid food, and its age in weeks changes the answer completely, so that call is not optional.

How many litter boxes does one kitten need?

Two. The standing rule among cat owners is one box per cat plus one spare, and it holds at one kitten as much as at three cats. Put them in different rooms once the kitten has the run of the house, keep both away from the food, and scoop daily. A kitten that has to cross the whole house to reach the only box will pick somewhere closer.

When can a kitten have dry food?

Go by the label on the food you are buying, and confirm the timing with your vet. Every kitten food prints its own age guidance, and that guidance plus your vet’s read on your particular kitten is the only answer I am prepared to give. I do not give feeding or health advice on this site.

What should a kitten sleep in?

Something with sides. A donut bed with a raised rim gives a kitten a wall to lean against, which matters more than softness, and a cardboard box with a blanket does the same job for free on night one.
