We want to be candid about how petapproves.com is secured today, including where the gaps are.
Who runs this
Pet Approves is a one-person operation. Gunner Vance writes and runs the site, and he holds the single admin account.
No reader accounts exist on this site, and there is no separate team of moderators or editors with their own logins.
That small footprint cuts both ways. Fewer people touch the site, which means fewer places a mistake can start, but it also means one person carries the whole job.
What is in place
- HTTPS everywhere. The whole site runs over SSL, so traffic between your browser and our server is encrypted.
- Regular updates. We keep WordPress core and our plugins updated as part of normal site maintenance.
- Caching layer. LiteSpeed Cache, with its object-cache component, sits in front of the site and helps it stay fast and stable under load.
What is not in place yet
We would rather tell you plainly than leave you guessing.
- No third-party security plugin, such as Wordfence or Sucuri, is currently installed.
- No independently-audited two-factor authentication program covers our admin accounts today.
Neither gap is a sign of a known problem. We are naming them so you know exactly where things stand.
Accounts and passwords
Because no reader accounts exist, there is no reader password for anyone to leak or steal. You never create a login here to read an article or leave a comment.
The admin account uses a strong, unique password. No two-factor authentication plugin is installed on this site yet, and we would rather name that gap than hide it.
Hosting-level protections
Our host, Hostinger, provides baseline server-level protections as part of its hosting platform. These protections are provided by our host and have not been independently audited by us.
Third parties
A handful of outside companies handle parts of this site, and each one carries its own security, separate from ours.
- Hostinger. Our hosting provider, running the server this site lives on.
- Cloudflare. Handles DNS for petapproves.com.
- Google Analytics 4. Collects aggregated traffic data through Google Site Kit.
- Amazon. Hosts the product images shown in our reviews, loaded directly from Amazon’s servers.
Each of these companies runs its own security program, well beyond what a one-person site could build on its own. We rely on them for the piece of the puzzle they own.
Backups
Our host keeps backups. We have not independently verified the frequency or schedule Hostinger uses, so we will not quote one here.
We would rather tell you plainly that we have not confirmed a number than guess at one and be wrong.
Report a security concern
If you notice something that looks like a security issue on this site, please email us. We take reports seriously and will look into them.
If something goes wrong
If we ever discover a security problem, here is what we would do. We would fix the issue first, note what happened on this page, and email anyone we can identify as directly affected.
We would rather over-communicate than stay quiet about something that touches you. There is no reader database to protect here, but if a problem ever put anyone’s information at risk, we would say so plainly and say what we did about it.
Review
We review this page whenever the site changes in a way that affects security, such as adding a new plugin or a new third-party service. The date stamp at the top of this page always shows the last update.
If you read this page a year from now and nothing has changed, that means nothing material changed on the security side, not that we forgot about it.
